Crew Clothing Wishlist

1. Kat Graphic Top, £18
2. Corinne Sweater, £32
3. Beatrice Scarf, £10
4. Hudson Dry Wax Jacket, £105
5. Oversized Broderie Dress, £35
I'd never heard of Crew Clothing before, but having a browse through their website I've found myself falling in love with more than just a couple of their pieces, from the pretty mint stripes of the Corinne sweater to the gorgeous broderie detailing and cobalt blue colour of the dress. The Beatrice scarf is an understated way to add floral to an outfit, maybe if you're wearing another print and aren't confident clashing coloured prints. The Kat top would be a perfect beach cover-up, and the Hudson jacket is the sort of thing the sensible country girl in me swoons over - I love the belt detail and the fact it has plenty of pockets!
Have you heard of Crew Clothing? What are your favourite items from the site? Have you entered this competition?

NOTD: Prickly Pear & Lilac Fantasy

I've blogged about Models Own 'Lilac Fantasy' previously, and mentioned that I was disappointed how sheer it was; five coats and it still wasn't opaque. I've recently got round to trying it layered over other polishes, in this case Barry M's 'Prickly Pear', one of my favourites from the Gelly Hi-Shine range. In this pairing, I love it! One coat of 'Lilac Fantasy' over two coats of 'Prickly Pear' is perfect in terms of coverage, and has a beautiful pinky-blue shimmer, seen in the photos below. I used OPI's Nail Envy as my base coat, and Seche Vite as a topcoat.
What do you think? Do you like to layer polishes up and see how they combine? What your favourite pairing?

Bucket List

Money Supermarket are currently holding a competition to win £1000 to put towards crossing something off your bucket list; all you have to do to enter is write about one budget and one extravagant thing you'd like to achieve before you "kick the bucket". If you'd like to take part, you can find full details here.
Northern Lights
Photo Credit Joar Andre; photo links to source.
My extravagant item would be seeing the Northern Lights; look at this photo! They're simply beautiful and something I'd absolutely love to experience. They can only be seen from the top of the Northern hemisphere; think northern Canada, Iceland and Scandinavia. I'd love to go to Iceland, but that's a pretty pricey place to visit, and once you've factored in flights, transfers, insurance, accommodation, food, spending money.. It's something that I doubt I'll be able to justify. Luckily, I have a friend who lives in Sweden so hopefully one day I'll visit her and be able to tie the two together.
Skydiving
Photo credit Rockmantic; photo links to source.
My budget item is a skydive; maybe not the most budget of budget bucket list items (wow that's a mouthful) but comparatively, a bargain! There's a centre around an hour on the train from where I live, where you can get a two-day course including the jump for around £230; of course I'd have to take the boyfriend, so once we'd got there we'd probably be looking at about £500. I'd like to combine this with raising money for charity, so I'd ask people to sponsor me as well - two birds with one stone!
What items are on your bucket list? Is there anything you're desperate to achieve or complete?
I'm tagging Lucy, Rachael, and Bex to also do this post!

Wishlist: Beach Days

$

With the British summer having now arrived, a mere two months behind schedule, all I want to do is sit in the sun. Preferably on the beach, so that I have the option of running into the sea at regular intervals to cool off. I'm lucky enough to live pretty close to the seaside and it's one of my stepkids' favourite places to go, so hopefully we'll get to spend a few days there while the sunshine holds out. I've put together a little wishlist today of beach-perfect items.
5. Little Marcel Flip Flops£22.50 £15.80
6. Crochet Bikini Top, £14 and Bottoms, £12
The stripey dress is perfect for daytime and, being nautical-themed, is just the thing for a day eating ice-cream at the seaside. The anchor ring is also an obvious choice and would look fab with the dress. Flip-flops are a must for me on the beach, to avoid burning your feet on hot sand or cutting yourself on sharp stones. I love the colour of this crochet bikini and find that halter-neck styles are the most flattering for me. I love novelty-sunglasses and this floral pair are just gorgeous. Bright nails are a summer staple and this shade from OPI's Euro Centrale collection would match the stripes of the dress perfectly. Finally, a roomy bag is essential for holding your towel, suncream and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated!
You may have noticed I've featured a couple of items from Sugar + Style, and Nhuc has been kind enough to offer a discount code for readers; you can use the code 'justjess20' at checkout to get 20% off your order! This code is only valid until the end of July, so make the most of it.
Which is your favourite item from my wishlist? What are your must-have beach day essentials? Will you be heading to the beach this summer?

Alice Earrings Yellow
Alice Earrings, $14
Hoopla Earrings sell vintage custom earrings (along with bracelets and headbands), at really reasonable prices; the Alice earrings shown above are a bargain at under £10 and are perfect for Britain's current heatwave. They remind me of sunflowers! I think these would be perfect for a casual outfit, maybe with little denim shorts and a stripey top. They'd also look gorgeous with a little black dress for a pop of colour.
Styling Yellow Alice Earrings
Monochrome Striped Peplum Vest, £8.99
Blue Acid Wash Faded Denim Hotpants, £19.99
Tan Block Wedge Sandals, £34.99
A Wear Black Lace-Back Dress, £24
New Look Yellow Heels, £17.99
Neon Clutch Purse, £14
How would you style these earrings? They're also available in a number of other colours including Aqua, Coral, Mint, Pink, Red, and White; which colour would you go for?

Review: Benefit They're Real! Mascara

$

0
They're Real! is a product I've heard a lot of love for since starting blogging, but its prohibitive price tag has always put me off buying it to see what all the fuss was about; I didn't want to hate it and feel I'd wasted my money, and then again I didn't want to fall in love and not be able to afford to keep repurchasing. So I was pretty happy to get a free mini (4g) tube with Elle magazine a couple of months ago! I've not been wearing it every day so I've taken a few weeks to try it out properly, and now I want to share my thoughts.
First up, the packaging, and we're off to a bad start; I don't like the shape of the tube as it makes me feel like there'd be product which would get trapped in the wider bit at the top, with no way of getting it out. I'm not keen on the colour of the tube, either, but I could live with it if I loved the mascara.. I'm also going to complain about the wand - it's a plastic rather than bristle wand, which I don't mind in and of itself. However, the spikey ball on the end of the wand was frankly an accident waiting to happen near my eyes, and I can confirm it hurts like hell. Also, this is the worst mascara I've ever used for failing to remove excess product from the wand on the way out of the tube - the plus-side to that being, it would be impossible to forget to do it yourself. So, I don't like the wand, although I can work with it; it just means I have to be very careful, meaning application takes longer than usual.
Benefit They're Real! Mascara Review
After all that, I'd want it to be a bloody good mascara, for the price. Nope. I know this is an unpopular viewpoint but I found this distinctly average, and to prove my point the photos below show two coats of They're Real! on the left, and two coats of my everyday Avon Super Extend Eye Accents Mascara on the right. Personally, I can't see much difference - I don't think They're Real is any better than the Avon, which is a mere fraction of the price and has a far less lethal wand. I don't think this is any better than any other good mascara I've tried. And to add insult to injury, it is the worst mascara I have ever tried to remove! It comes off quite well with my Garnier Simply Essentials Eye Make-Up Remover but does require holding a cotton pad over the eye for about 30 seconds, and my previous remover didn't stand a chance.
Benefit They're Real! Mascara Review
All in all, I don't feel like They're Real! is worth its £19.50 price tag and this isn't a product I'd repurchase - I don't like the wand, the packaging, the mascara itself, or the removal process.
Have you tried They're Real!? Did you get on with it any better than I did? What's your favourite mascara?

Review: Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub & Mask

$

I was super excited to try Vichy's Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub and Mask when I received it as part of a giveaway prize from Helena as it's been a popular product amongst bloggers. Claiming to be suitable for acne-prone skin, this multi-tasking gem is free from soap, parabens and alcohol, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub & Mask Review
I like the tube, which is white and green, making it look clean and fresh, whilst also clearly stating what the product does on the front of the tube. The packaging claims, "An association of "peeling effect" ingredients; a skin soothing agent and 25% clay in a creamy texture. Results: One cleanser with three uses: 1. Cleansing cream: Reduces sebum and impurities. 2. Exfoliator: Helps unclog pores. 3. Mask: Mattifies skin and clarifies complexion. Directions: As a cleanser/scrub: Massage onto damp face. As a mask: Apply a thin layer to the face and let dry for 5 minutes. Rinse off with water."
Squeezed from the tube, this is a thick, creamy grey-green product containing tiny little blue beads; it doesn't really have a scent beyond a sort of clean, skincare smell which is inoffensive and barely noticeable. I've tried it as both a cleanser/scrub and as a mask, and I'll review the uses separately, starting with the cleanser/scrub.
Review Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser Scrub & Mask
The first thing I'll say is, if you have sensitive skin or a lot of spots, this will not be comfortable to use as it is a fairly "scrubby" scrub; whilst my skin is sensitive, it's generally to ingredients rather than scrubs so this hasn't bothered me too much. However, it is impossible to use this as a cleanser without also getting a thorough exfoliation, so if you have dry or sensitive skin, this isn't a product you'll want to be using everyday. On my oily skin, though, it's not been a problem. The cream spreads easily over the skin and does a good job of removing dirt and make-up, leaving the skin feeling soft and clean. The ingredients list features Salicylic Acid which is meant to help fight spots, and this does seem to have reduced time it takes for any blemishes to clear up. Rinsing off takes a bit of doing due to all the little exfoliation particles, and I've found the best way of removing it is either in the shower or by splashing plenty of water onto your face; using a muslin cloth or flannel makes the scrub too harsh even for me! I do find that this leaves my skin feeling toned and tight, to the extent of being slightly uncomfortable, so I always make sure to use a good moisturiser after this. I only really use this as an evening cleanser as it's just too much fuss for the morning for me personally, and I wouldn't like to use it twice a day anyway.
Vichy Normaderm Mask
As a mask, this feels gentler to apply, and dries pretty quickly to a pale grey colour, although it doesn't get as stiff as some clay masks I've tried, meaning it isn't uncomfortable. This, too, takes some removal, and I only use this before a shower as it's pretty much impossible to remove it all otherwise. Again, this leaves my skin feeling soft and clean, and seems to tighten pores nicely, though again a good moisturiser afterwards is essential. I've been using Normaderm as a mask around once a week and have noticed my skin is softer and tighter for a few days afterwards.
Overall, I do feel that Vichy's Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub & Mask is a great multi-tasking product for people with oily or acne-prone skin, although I wouldn't recommend it be used daily if your skin is sensitive to scrubs or on the dry side. It cleans effectively, leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth, and tightens pores as well. Being a 3-in-1, I also think this would be great for travelling with to save precious space in your luggage! This is definitely a product I'd look at repurchasing once I've finished this tube.
Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser Scrub & Mask is available at £11 for 125ml from Boots.
Have you tried the Normaderm 3-in-1? How did you like it? What are your views on multi-tasking products?

Review: OPI Nail Envy

How To Treat Peeling Flaking Nails
I've always had long, strong nails which grow quickly and don't tend to break; it's partly good genes (my mum also has good nails) and partly due to drinking lots of milk! However, I have also always struggled with my nails splitting and peeling, and nothing I tried helped with this - I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the eczema I get on my hands. In desperation, I ordered a bottle of OPI's famous Nail Envy to see if it could help my poor nails. Containing hydrolysed wheat protein and calcium, Nail Envy claims to strengthen the nails naturally.
OPI Nail Envy Review
OPI Nail Envy
OPI Nail Envy Bottle
Below, you can see my nails before I began using Nail Envy; as you can see, every single one is just flaking and peeling at the tip. No matter how much I cut or filed those bits off, no amount of filing in one direction or not filing at all, seemed to help. As well as looking awful, this also meant that my nail polish was prone to chipping really quickly as the nails were weakened in the peeling areas.
OPI Nail Envy - Before
Nail Envy recommends that you apply two coats to clean, bare nails, and then additional coat every other day, removing the whole lot once a week and starting again. I'll admit, I didn't use it quite this religiously, as I couldn't bare to have naked nails that long. Instead, I've been using it as a base coat for whatever nail polish I've chosen to wear. I've then been adding a coat over the nail polish every day or two for the duration of the mani, although I use Seche Vite as a top coat when I'm actually painting my nails. I've been using it like this for around two months now.
OPI Nail Envy - After
At first, I didn't really notice a change, and then my nails seemed to get worse, before all of a sudden becoming almost perfect. As you can see above, I have one nail which is still peeling, the index finger on my left hand (on the right in the photo), but every other nail is completely free of the horrible peely, flakey mess that they were just a couple of months back. My nails are holding their length much better as they're thicker from not peeling away, and my nail polish is lasting longer as a consequence. For reference, I last cut/filed my nails around ten days before taking the "after" photos, and in the photo I'm wearing two coats of Nail Envy so you can see the subtle shiny finish it gives - perfect if you're not allowed to wear nail polish for school, work etc.!
Nail Envy is a product I would 100% recommend if you suffer from flakey, peeling nails and are willing to put in the time to reapply frequently. It's definitely a product I'll be continuing to use, both as a base coat and as a treatment over my nail polish, and I will be repurchasing once this bottle is finished. In two months I've used less than half a bottle, so I can see a bottle lasting me around six months altogether.
OPI Nail Envy is available from Boots priced at £18.65 for 15ml, or BeautyBay do a twin-pack for £35 which works out at £17.50 per bottle. I bought mine from this Amazon seller for around £9, so if you're happy ordering something like this off Amazon then that's obviously the cheapest option!
Have you tried OPI's Nail Envy? What do you use to help keep your nails in good condition?

Sea Breeze Purse from Disaster Designs @ Not On The High Street

Disaster Designs Sea Breeze Purse
I received a Not On The High Street voucher as part of my prize from etailPR's Shopcade competition, and have already begun putting it to good use, getting birthday gifts for my mum and elder step-daughter, as well as a Christmas present for my boyfriend! (Check out my organisation.) I also treated myself to a new purse; the Disaster Designs Sea Breeze Purse, which was £22.40 from the seller Lisa Angel Homewares & Gifts. It arrived beautifully packaged, although I was obviously having a Bad Blogger day as I totally forgot to take photos. I'm sure you can forgive me when you see the purse in all its beauty below, though. I love it! It has a seaside theme, as the name might suggest, with a boat and compass on the front, appliqued lace to look like foamy waves, and lots of cute little flags on the back.
Sea Breeze Purse
Inside are six credit card slots, which isn't as many as I would like but I'm making do. There's also a clear pocket for ID (I've turned my driving license round!), as well as a zipped section for coins and two large pockets for notes, receipts etc. It's a lovely big purse with plenty of room for all my essentials, and the only thing I'd change would be the ribbon on the press-stud closure; I think it's unnecessary and don't like the way it flaps around. I might end up removing it, come to think about it! Whilst £22.40 is quite a lot for me to spend on a purse, I wanted to treat myself with my prize, and it was reduced from £32 so I still sort of feel like I grabbed a bargain! I'm really happy with the quality of the purse and can see it lasting me for years to come.

Review: Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser

$

I won a tube of Superdrug's Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser in a giveaway over on Jess's blog, Lovely Jubbly. I didn't realise until I received it that it's actually intended for Normal to Dry skin, which if you've read my blog before you'll know is certainly not me; my skin is most decidedly oily. It sounded like a lovely cleanser, though, so I thought I'd give it a try and today I'm sharing my thoughts!
Presented in a pretty cream plastic tube with a flip-cap, this cleanser would look at home in any bathroom and would be safe to travel with, although maybe a little on the larger side. One thing I really like about this cleanser is how informative the packaging is, giving you plenty of details about the ingredients and what they're there for: "Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser with muslin cloth is ideal for removing dirt and make-up whilst providing gentle exfoliation. This will help improve circulation, leaving skin deeply cleansed, soft and radiant. Enriched with naturally sourced Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that will help to shield your skin against environmental damage and premature skin aging by combating the harmful effects of free radicals. The rich and creamy formula also contains a skin conditioning multivitamin complex comprising Vitamins A, B, F and H, which, combined with horse chestnut extract, helps to care for dry skin."
Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser Review
The cleanser itself is a thick, rich, creamy product which is pale in colour and has a lovely scent to it. The instructions suggest that you, "Gently massage the creamy cleanser into your face and neck using circular movements. Rinse the muslin cloth in hand-hot water and wring out before polishing off the cleanser, taking care around the delicate eye area. Give your face a splash of cool water and pat dry with a towel to finish the process. Superdrug recommends using this in conjunction with other products from our trusted Vitamin E range."
Review Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser
Following these instructions, I've been massaging it into my skin for a minute or two, before polishing off with a muslin cloth. The cleanser works into the skin really well and you can see it lifting away dirt and make-up as the cream-coloured product turns murky on your face. It polishes off with a muslin cloth really easily, and the skin is left feeling well-cleansed and soft; this cleanser isn't drying in the slightest, which is ideal both for drier skin and also for oily skin, which can go into oil over-drive if it's stripped or dried out by skincare products. Although it's rich and creamy, it doesn't feel greasy or heavy in the slightest.
Despite perhaps not being best suited to my skintype, this is nonetheless a lovely cleanser which does exactly what it says on the tube and has left my skin soft and clean. I haven't been using this every day and I probably wouldn't repurchase it personally as I feel I get more benefit from using a product designed for my skintype, but if you have normal to dry skin I'd definitely recommend giving this a whirl!
Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser is priced at £4.99 for 200ml, which includes one muslin cloth.
Have you tried this cleanser? How did you like it? What's your current favourite cleanser?

July Empties

July Empties
I'm not going to make the cliched comments about July having flown past, although it has, but instead am going to jump straight into the products I've finished up this month; it's quite a long one this time, including a few products I've been trying to finish up for what feels like ages, as well as a couple I'm sorry to see the back of.
July Empties 1
Naked Sweet Almond & Sunflower Intensive Care Shampoo This smells absolutely gorgeous; a beautiful Almond scent which made this shampoo a total pleasure to use. It left my hair feeling soft, clean and healthy, although not as clean as the Volume shampoo Naked make which is my favourite of the ones I've tried. This might be something I'd use maybe once a week in the future, just to soften my hair up a little.
Repurchase? Maybe.
Boots Botanics Shine Away Mattifying Day Cream I wasn't very impressed with this moisturiser, as I mentioned in my review; it didn't do anything to mattify my skin and didn't really feel like it was imparting much hydration, either. The only point in its favour was the SPF 15 it contained, although even that wasn't as high as I might have liked. This moisturiser just wasn't for me, I'm afraid!
Repurchase? No.
Glam Glow Youthmud Mask I managed to get two masks from this 7ml sample tube and loved it; it tingled as it worked, leaving my skin, brighter, tighter and clearer, with a glow that lasted a good few days. This is a definite investment at £49.99 for the full-sized jar, but one I can see myself making in the future as it really is that good!
Repurchase? Hopefully.
Good Things Mattifying Moisturiser Another sample, this 30ml tube has lasted me around six weeks using it most mornings. It does provide a nice matte surface for applying make-up over, but I haven't found it holds shine at bay or helps my foundation last any longer, which is what I was hoping for. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I did find myself a little disappointed with this product.
Repurchase? Probably not.
Naked Coco de Mer Body Butter I loved this and raved about it in my review; although the scent wasn't one I'd go for given a choice, the amazing moisture levels this gave along with its bargain price tag meant I pretty much fell in love with it.
Repurchase? Yes.
Cutex Nourishing Nail Polish Remover Like I've said in the past, I tend to buy nail polish remover fairly arbitrarily depending what's on offer. I did like using this as underneath the usual polish remover smell, this had a faint coconutty scent which was nice. It removed nail polish well and I don't think there's an awful lot more to say about it, really!
Repurchase? Maybe.

July Empties 2
Naked Soft Touch Starflower Body Wash A favourite of mine, this shower gel smells gorgeous! It has a beautiful cinnamon scent and leaves my skin soft and clean, containing no SLS or parabens which tend to dry my skin out.
Repurchase? Already have.
Batiste Tropical & Paisley Especially in summer, this is a must-have for me to keep my hair fresh; it can get lank and limp so quickly in the heat and Batiste works wonders at delaying the inevitable with a fresh summery scent. I picked up Paisley on a whim, just to try something different, and I have to say I really like this scent, too; there doesn't seem to be a bad Batiste scent!
Repurchase? Always.
Gillette Satin Care Shaving Gel There really isn't much to say about this, aside from it's been pretty essential in keeping my legs silky-smooth in the heatwave Britain has been blessed with in July; I don't remember the last time I was regularly getting my legs out!
Repurchase? Yes.
Miss Sporty So Matte Foundation in '02 Light' I don't even remember buying this foundation but I do know I loved it; it was pretty much the perfect shade for me, applied well giving a good level of coverage, and lasted reasonably well too. I also really liked the packaging; the style of the pump meant no product wastage, and one pump was just the right amount for my whole face until the last couple of applications, when I needed two. This applied beautifully with fingers, damp make-up sponge or my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, giving a soft, matte finish. I can't believe I've never reviewed this properly!
Repurchase? Yes, if it's still available.
Origins Make A Difference Rejuvenating Skin Treatment This featured in my May Empties post; don't worry, I've not used a whole jar in two months! I thought this was nearly full but it turned out there was less than half left and now, sadly, I've run out. I love this for a really great moisturisation without leaving my skin feeling greasy or sticky at all, and love how my skin feels slightly matte even after eight hours sleep, which is practically unheard of for me!
Repurchase? One day; sadly way out of budget currently.
Tea Tree Nose Pore Strips Not the best pore strips I've ever used, I purchased these at random in Bodycare and was pretty disappointed; I have a morbid love of seeing what's been unplugged from my pores and these gave me little to look at! I think I'll be going back to Superdrug's own brand Tea Tree Pore Strips, which are the best I've tried.
Repurchase? No.

What products have you finished up this month? Have you tried any of the things I've mentioned? Which are your favourites?

My Skincare Routine: Part One - Morning

$
0
0
I've seen a few 'Skincare Routine' posts around lately and think they're really interesting, especially since I'm super nosey and have a massive amount of love for skincare. Seriously, I think I have some kind of problem. I decided to break my routine down into Morning and Evening, so today's post is the first part of this; the products I use to get myself ready for the day!
Morning Skincare Routine
If I'm having a shower, I'll use either B. Refined Exfoliating Cleanser or Superdrug Tea Tree Exfoliating Cream Wash in the shower; both of them freshen the skin nicely, removing any dirt and oil which has built up over night as well as providing light exfoliation, which is a must with my oily skin. Around once a week, I'll use Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub & Mask, applying as a mask before I get into the shower and then massaging off under the water for the full exfoliating effect. On days where I've showered the previous evening, I tend to use Superdrug's Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser with a muslin cloth to just freshen my skin, although on occasion I skip this and just wash my face with water. All four of these products are great for waking my skin up and leaving it soft and clean for the day ahead.
I follow my cleansing with Laidbare's Working 9 to 5 Anti-Aging Hydration Cream to plump my skin and leave it soft and ready for my make-up. I've just started using this after finally finishing up my Botanics Shine Away Mattifying Day Cream, so I'll have a review coming in the next couple of weeks.
And that's it! I try to keep my morning routine short and sweet as I don't like faffing when I'm trying to get ready and out the house in as little time as possible.
What does your morning skincare routine involve? What's your favourite daytime moisturiser?

Chaise Longue Boutique Dining Room Wishlist
I don't have a dining room at the moment but it's definitely a room my dream home will have; I think it's really important for families to sit down and eat together without the distractions of TVs and phones, and a dining room would be perfect for that. With that in mind, I chose some of my favourite dining room pieces for my wish list! Obviously a nice big table and plenty of chairs are a must, and I also chose a matching glass cabinet for storing things like table linen and posh crockery. The glass part would be lovely for displaying my collection of glass bottles and similar pretty bits and pieces. I also went for a lovely big mirror which would ideally go on a (real or faux) chimney breast, alongside the dining table, over this gorgeous statement wallpaper; the rest of the walls would be painted a pretty duck-egg blue to offset the white furnishings.
Do you like the items I've chosen? Do you have a dining room in your house? Do you like statement wallpapers?

NOTD: Barry M 'Greenberry'

This is a scheduled post; this weekend, I'm volunteering at an endurance event called Total Warrior which is being held up near my mum's house. Initially my best friend and I intended to be entering, but by the time we got our backsides into gear, all the places were full so we decided we'd go for the next best thing! I love volunteering at sporting events, I've marshalled a few triathlons in the past and there's always such a great atmosphere and so many inspirational people. I should be home tomorrow night, no doubt bringing plenty of mud with me! I hope you all have fantastic weekends, too.
Mid-week, in the mood for a pretty, bright blue/green colour on my nails, Barry M's 'Greenberry' from their Gelly Hi-Shine range was an obvious choice; a sort of turquoisey shade, this is perfect for summer and instantly makes me think of the seaside! I have to say, 'Greenberry' is somewhat of a nightmare to apply, with streaks and drags galore. With a bit of patience, though, I think I got it looking reasonably presentable and I do love the colour so I might let it off. The photos below show two coats over Nail Envy, with no top coat.

On a side note, how gorgeous is my eldest step-daughter's sunflower!? This is the first one which has flowered, we've a few more hopefully soon to follow, and I've never seen a child so excited :)
What's on your nails at the moment? Have you got any of the Gelly Hi-Shine polishes? I really want a couple from their summer range!

My Skincare Routine: Part Two - Evening

A few days ago, I posted Part One of my Skincare Routine: Morning. Today, I'm sharing part two; the steps I take in the evening to remove the day and get myself ready for bed.
Evening Skincare Routine
I start by removing eye make-up with Garnier's Simply Essentials Soothing Eye Make-up Remover. I then use Botanics Hot Cloth Cleansing Balm to remove my make-up and any dirt or oil which has built up throughout the day. I remove this twice to be sure that my skin is left feeling soft, smooth, and completely clean. Together, these two products remove every trace of make-up and leave my skin ready for the next stages of my routine. If I'm having a shower, I'll do that after removing my make-up, generally using an exfoliator in the shower as I mentioned in my Morning Routine post.
Next, I apply La Roche-Posay's Redermic R Dermatological Anti-Wrinkle Treatment, which I've been using for the last few days after receiving it as a Try from What's In My Handbag. I leave this to soak in for a couple of minutes, usually whilst I brush my teeth. I then apply Alpha-H Absolute Eye Complex to my eye contour area, and Witch Blemish Stick to any red blemishes, to help calm and shrink them overnight. I apply Laidbare's Spot The Difference over my forehead, cheeks and chin to help prevent spots appearing, then finish with Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant Moisturiser with White Tea; this isn't the best moisturiser I've ever used and I find it a little bit too heavy for my oily skin, but it smells lovely and does do a good job of hydrating my skin. I then drag myself into bed, where I apply lip balm and cuticle oil when I remember, and generally fall fast asleep!
What's your evening skincare routine like? Do you always remember to take off your make-up? Can you recommend a good night cream for oily skin?

A Different Kind of Mud

We're all familiar with mud masks in the beauty blogging community, but as I mentioned on Saturday, I've spent the weekend just gone volunteering at a local endurance event called Total Warrior UK, where there was plenty of mud of an altogether different variety. Spread over two days, the event involved around 6000 runners completing either a 10K or 10mile obstacle course (or in some cases, both!) including such obstacles as the 'Human Barbecue', 'Ball Breaker', 'Widow Maker', and my personal favourite 'You Tube'. I ended up manning the water station at the furthest point of the course, which also included covering three obstacles - 'Worm Muncher', the Hurdles, and 'You Tube'. I just wanted to share a few photos from the weekend and let you know that I have every intention of going back next year - I hope to complete the 10k race on the Saturday and then volunteer again on the Sunday, as it was an amazing experience and such good fun!

This is what happens when competitors hug/kiss you after The Hurdles - chest deep mud in places!

What did you get up to this weekend? Have you ever completed an endurance event like Total Warrior? Do you think I'm totally mad for wanting to do it!?

Crinkly Chocolate Cookies Recipe
My go-to recipe when I fancy baking something chocolatey is Chocolate Brownies, but yesterday I was in the mood for something new, so I decided to make some chocolate cookies. They turned out really well so I thought I'd share the recipe for you guys to have a go!
Crinkly Chocolate Cookies 1
Start by melting 100g dark chocolate and 80g butter in a small saucepan. Meanwhile, combine 225g caster sugar, 125g plain flour, 1 medium egg, 1/4tsp bicarbonate of soda, and 2tbsp cocoa powder in a large bowl, and mix well.
Crinkly Chocolate Cookies 2
Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the bowl and stir to combine. The mixture will be thick and quite sticky. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Crinkly Chocolate Cookies 3
Remove from the fridge, and take 1tbsp amounts of mixture; roll into a ball, roll in icing sugar, and place on a lined baking sheet.
Crinkly Chocolate Cookies 4
Bake at 160°C for 15 minutes, and allow to cool on the tray. As you can see, I didn't leave quite enough space between mine for them to spread as they baked, so it might be better to do them in two batches to avoid this problem... They still taste good, though - soft, chocolatey and delicious!

Summer Essentials

I popped into town last week to pick up a few essentials using my Boots and Superdrug points; see, saving up your loyalty points really pays off when money is tight! I'm reaching the end of my current shampoo, so in Boots I grabbed another bottle of my favourite Naked Volume Bodybuilding Shampoo, along with a can of Batiste in the new fragrance Graffiti - just to try! I also popped into Superdrug for an exfoliator and some pore strips, and ended up picking up this Arora Pink Grapefruit Body Butter to try as well, since its ingredients list seemed pretty good and I'm trying to be extra careful not to irritate my eczema now I know what the triggers are.
Summer Skincare Essentials
I also placed a little order on Asos with the voucher I won in etailPR's Shopcade giveaway, coming away with Pop Beauty's Face Magnet Primer, as I'm still looking for my Holy Grail primer and this has had some good reviews. I also ordered a couple of skincare items; REN's Mayblossom T-Zone Control Cleansing Gel, and Korres's Sage & Salicylic Acid Regulating Cleansing Gel. You may be beginning to notice a pattern here, but I'm desperately searching for the product which will help to bring my oily skin under control! I'll be reviewing all three of these products once I've had a chance to try them properly.

Summer Beauty with Shopcade

Where has the sunshine gone!? Today I'm just sharing my favourite summer beauty products via my Shopcade list, in the hopes that summer isn't quite over yet and we might be lucky enough to get a few more nice days before we head into Autumn.

The Body Shop's Body Butters are a firm favourite all year round, but the Lemon and Pink Grapefruit scents are perfect for the summer months; fruity and citrussy. I'm a lover of bright nails, and have been lusting over Barry M's Summer collection in the Gelly range for weeks now; 'Key Lime' and 'Guava' are my favourites! I have Essie's 'Orange, It's Obvious' and it's ideal for bright summer toenails. SPF is obviously a summer essential and this oil-free offering from Murad would be perfect for under make-up. I also love Origins' VitaZing tinted moisturiser which provides SPF combined with a light coverage. The Body Shop's Tea Tree Pore Minimiser is a firm favourite of mine, great for helping make-up stay in place all day. Humidity can leave your hair looking limp and lank, I find Batiste brilliant for perking my 'do back up and reducing the amount of washing I have to do. Finally, a nice hot pink lip and a pretty, shimmery smokey eye are the finishing touches for a lovely warm evening.
What are your favourite Summer beauty products? Do you own any of the products on my list?
